Garbage Chutes Closed

All garbage chutes will be closed and off limits while we arrange to have the chutes cleaned and at a later date, thoroughly treated for exterminating.

All chutes are closed as of today, Thursday December 19th.

During this process, please bring all trash to the basement until further notice.

We encourage you to take this time to re-educate yourself on separating your trash, food scraps and recycling into the provided bins in the basement. Trash must not be left outside the apartments, in hallway areas or in front of the chute or other common areas.

All residents must recycle. IT’S THE LAW.

Buildings that do not recycle properly are subjected to fines. Any such fines will be passed on to residents found not properly recycling. Care must always be taken to separate glass, metal and plastic. Boxes must be broken down and placed in the designated area next to our paper recycling.

Metal, Glass, Rigid Plastics & Cartons:

You can recycle metal, glass jars and bottles, rigid plastics (the recycling number on the package doesn't matter), and cartons together in labeled bin with a secure lid or a clear plastic bag.

NOTE: Empty, rinsed containers are easier to process and less attractive to rodents and roaches

Mixed Paper and Cardboard:

You can recycle mixed paper together in a labeled bin with a secure lid or a clear plastic bag. Flatten and bundle corrugated cardboard (tie with twine) and set out next to bins or bags.

Sanitation will pick up ALL food scraps, food-soiled paper, leaf and yard waste. This includes meat, bones, dairy, prepared foods, greasy uncoated paper plates and pizza boxes, and products certified or labeled compostable.

DO NOT compost trash such as diapers, personal hygiene products, animal waste, wrappers, non-paper packaging, and foam products.

Using this option helps us minimize the amount of food in our trash bags and prevent vermin interest on our curb front.

Sanitation collect only e-waste items covered under the NYS Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act. This includes:

• Household and office electronics (computers, laptops, keyboards, printers)

• Smaller entertainment electronics (video game consoles, cell phones, MP3 players)

• TVs, VCRs, DVDs, DVRs

Please do not practice "wishful recycling" Sadly, a lot of items are not recyclable and will need to be placed in the trash. Please stay informed and consult our basement signage for help in separating out your recycling and organics appropriately.

What Cannot Be Recycled

Most items that cannot be recycled can be thrown in the trash.

• Bowling balls and any sports balls

• Cassettes, CDs, and VHS tapes

• Condiment packets

• Dishes, cups, and mugs (ceramics, glassware, pottery)

• Face masks and disposable gloves

• Foam products (Styrofoam, packing peanuts)

• Glass windows and mirrors

• Ice cream tubs

• Markers and crayons

• Plastic tubes and pouches (toothpaste tubes, fruit pouches)

• Soft plastics (plastic bags, bubble wrap, plastic mailing envelopes, candy and snack wrappers)

• Tanglers (cables, wires, extension cords, string lights, garden hoses, window blinds)

• Wooden furniture and any items made of wood

• Diapers, feminine hygiene products, and wet wipes

• Hardcover books

• Heavily soiled paper plates

• Soft tissues, napkins, and paper towels

Check out Big Reuse for any of your larger items and other local donation opportunities such as Buy Nothing groups, etc. If you believe someone in the building may be able to use an item in good condition, you are welcome to share it via our Trash to Treasures area above our e-cycling and next to our plant area.
