FDNY Visit: False Alarm

Neighbors,

As some of you know as many of us were awoken around 6 AM Tuesday morning by a loud banging in the back hall, the fire department was on site. The alarm in Apt 3L was going off and the FDNY were alerted by a neighbor and proceeded to gain access to the apartment. Given the apartment is undergoing renovation, no one was in the apartment to open the door (as learned afterwards), therefore the FDNY broke down the door to ascertain their safety and the status of the unit. Upon gaining access to the apartment, the FDNY found the fire alarm but discerned that it was not activated by a fire in the unit. We are certainly thankful that everyone is safe. We know this was a concerning morning that disturbed sleep and brought up a lot of the same feelings we had around the October fire.

Some of us have become accustomed to loud banging and noise due to the construction and renovations occurring throughout the building, most recently on the third floor - although not at such an early hour. We appreciate our neighbors vigilance is reporting the alarm and the community that gathered in the hallway that morning out of concern. The shareholder of 3L was alerted that same day and visited the apartment and provided temporary cover to the unit as we await a new door order. Our research shows these fire alarm units may be affected by dust and debris on the sensor so we encourage you to alert any contractors and to clean or dust the units as needed. We will also be sending out additional guidelines and checkins on the installation of these alarms to make sure there are no nuisance alarms in the future. We will update you with more information as we discuss further our safety and fire procedures in the building.
